Although the idea of pelletizing sawdust to produce a more satisfactory fuel has been around for many years, it is only in the last ten years that this concept has been translated into a commercially successful reality. The market for densified pellets is primarily the residential pellet burning stove. These stoves burn much cleaner than the EPA requires. They are efficient and largely automatic in operation, about 350,000 have been sold. Modem pellet fuel is clean, dust free, low ash, with a bulk density of 40 pounds per cubic foot and a heat output of 8500 BTU per pound. This paper will review the state of the industry in the USA, and will discuss future developments.
