Applications of an acoustic sea-bed classification system to freshwater environmental research and remediation in Canada

A RoxAnn{trademark} acoustic sea-bed classification system has proven to be a useful tool in several Canadian projects on freshwater environmental research and remediation. Its principal application is in the rapid and detailed mapping of bottom sediment types in areas where conventional procedures are too time-consuming or costly. GIS analysis of RoxAnn data is used to produce maps and reports on sediment distribution which are critical for assessment of contaminated areas and planning for their remediation. Other potential uses currently being tested include time-series surveys of sediment patterns to determine sediment stability, and dual-frequency surveys for mapping of sediment thickness. Work is also in progress on quality-control procedures to improve the reliability of RoxAnn data and some alternatives in analysis and display of data which should provide better resolution.
