ACTION OF DEUTERON IRRADIATION UPON THE ELECTRIC RESISTANCE OF ALLOYS UNDERGOING ORDERING AND AGING
The effect of deuteron irradiation on the electric resistance of alloys Ni/sub 3/Fe, Fe/sub 3/Al undergoing ordering and of an alloy of Fe with 35% Ni and 4.5% Ti undergoing aging was investigated. The specimens were irradiated in a cyclotron with deuterons having an energy of 4 Mev. The electric resistance measurement was carried out by the potentiometric method. Because of the small dimensions of the specimens the voltage and the current leads constituted a single whole with the working part. The specimens of Ni/sub 3/Fe and of Fe/sub 3/ Al were investigated in the ordered and the unordered states; the specimens of Fe- Ni-Ti were studied in the aged and hardened states. It was established that when the ordered Fe/sub 3/Al alloy is irradiated its electric resistance was increased considerably, The electric resistance of the hardened alloy dropped, Bombarding of the Ni/sup 3/Fe alloy caused a considerable decrease in the electric resistance in both states. In all cases of irradiation with fluxes up to 5 x 10/ sup 17/ deuterons per 1 cm/sup 2/ causes a sharp change in electric resistance at a further increase of the total flux the rate of change dropped. The effects uncovered in the Fe-Ni-Ti alloy did not exceed the limits of experimental errors. It was concluded that the most probable process causing the reduction in electric resistance is the ordering. A considerable drop in the electric resistance of the alloy Ni/sub 3/Fe was noted, whose degree of ordering corresponded to a temperature of 250 to 300 deg C. In this alloy a further occurrence of ordering under irradiation was possible. The shape of the electric resistance curves of the irradiated specimens tempered at 250 deg C confirmed the hypothesis of the attainment of an intermediate degree of ordering as result of the irradiation. In tempering the Ni/sub 3/Fe the soaking time of the specimens at the respective temperatures was insufficient to obtain an equilibrium. (Ref. Zh. Met., No. 3,
