Organic reagents such as arsenazo-I, -I(, and -III, and thoron are useful for the photometric determination of U, Pu, Th, rare earths and other elements. These reagents contain sulfo groups which make them readily soluble in water, and difficult to extract with organic solvents. The negative charge on the sulfo groups can be compensated by addition of salts of heavy, hydrophobic organic cations such as organic amine salts (diphenylguanidine), tetraphenylarsonium salts, or oxonium salts formed by trubutylphosphate, BETA - napthol and cyclohexane. The properties of solutions of alkali metals in amine solvents were studied by optical, ETR, NMR and electrochemical methods. Complexation of the alkali cations by crown ethers and cryptands permitted the preparation of concentrated solutions of alkali metals in amine and ether solvents. Extensive alkali metal NMR studies of the exchange of M/sup +/ with crown-ethers and cryptands and of the alkali metal anion, M/sup -/, were made. Modeling solution vapor equilibria with solvation and solute assembly

By combining solvation (e.g. hydration) and solute assembly (e.g. ion pairing), solution vapor–liquid equilibrium (VLE) data was effectively modeled without the use of solute activity coefficients. The method assumes that solvent activity is governed by Raoult’s law ideality and corresponds to the concentration of free solvent (solvent not involved in solvation). Within the model, solution behavior is dictated by stochastically consistent speciation (solvated solute and solute assembles). Solvation is modeled as a linear decline from infinite dilution solvation (hydration) values to empirically determined saturation solvation (hydration) values. There is increasing evidence that the solvation structure of the active components in a liquid electrolyte solution strongly impacts the performance in electrochemical applications. In this work, the nanoscale solvation structures and dynamics of Mg(BH4)2 and Mg(TFSI)2 dissolved in diglyme (DGM) at various concentrations and ratios of Mg(BH4)2/Mg(TFSI)2 were investigated using a combination of natural abundance 25Mg NMR, quantum chemistry calculations of 25Mg NMR chemical shifts, classical molecular dynamics (MD) calculations, and electrochemical performance tests. By mixing two competing Mg salts, we were able to reduce the strong covalent interactions between Mg2+ and BH4â€“ anions. A small increase is observedmore »« less
