Immobilization of Cs, Tc, Sr and actinides separated out from Hanford HLW liquids can be effected in Synroc using ceramic processing techniques. This method avoids significant fission product volatilization because of the use of optimum redox conditions and the final consolidation is carried out in a sealed system. Two separate options for the state of the Tc in Synroc am feasible - either metallic Tc as encapsulated globules, alloyed with other metals, or as Tc{sup 4+} substituted for Ti{sup 4+}. Versions of Synroc made by melting at {approximately}1400{degrees}C are viable for the HLW fraction of the waste remaining after cleanup of the liquids. These Synroc derivatives are based on additions of CaO, TiO{sub 2}, SiO{sub 2} and Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, to form mixtures of zirconolite, perovskite, spinel, nepheline and glass as major phases.
