U-Th RECOVERY FROM PYROLYTIC CARBON-COATED CARBIDE FUEL PARTICLES BY ELECTROLYSIS IN NITRIC ACID
Electrodissolver experiments were conducted with pyrolytic C-coated UC/ sub 2/-ThC/sub 2/ fuel particles in both a direct contact anode dissolver and a U- shaped series'' dissolver. Under the conditions investigated (HNO/sub 3/ concentration, 4-10 M; current density, 1 to 10 amp/cm/sup 2/temperature 25 to 80 deg C), U and Th recoveries were less than 0.2%. The results of these experiments indicated that electrolytic methods are not adaptable to the processing of graphite-base reactor fuels containing carbon-coated particles. (auth)
