Title: SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE NEUTRON FLUX ON THE SURFACE OF A GRAPHITE-LINED CAVITY

A graphite-lined cavity is built at the outer end of the thermal column of the MIT Reactor. Seven variations of the material and geometrical arrangement of the cavity are made. The neutron flux is measured on the top surface and in the top wall of each variation and also on all surfaces and in the cavity itself of one of the variations. Absolute flux, cadmium ratio, and albedo measurements are made. The experimental results demonstrated that the cavity suitably modifies the magnitude, distribution, and direction of the neutrons emerging from the thermal column. A theoretical model is developed to calculate the magnitude and distribution of the neutron flux on the surfaces of a cavity. The values of the view factors and the albedos, that are necessary to calculate the flux in the cavities, are obtained from computer programs. The values of the flux are also calculated by using an electronic computer. The calculated values of the flux are in excellent agreement with the measured values, and it is felt that the use of the theoretical model is justified. (auth)
