THERMALLY RESISTANT ARTICLES AND METHOD FOR THEIR FABRICATION
A method is given for preparing a plastic mass for the production of intricate thin-walled siliconized silicon carbide articles and of graphite articles coated with silicon carbide, and for use as a welding agent between graphite joints. The plastic mass comprises a homogeneous mixture of 100 parts of finely divided carbon, 100 to 500 parts of finely divided silicon carbide, and 5 to 50 parts of a filmforming polymeric binder. In use, the plastic mass is formed into sheets and then shaped into the desired form, or it is spread in a film over an article to be coated, and then the form or coated article is heated to 3000 to 4000 deg F in the presence of excess silicon to eliminate the binder and to convert the mass into siliconized silicon carbide.
