Title: ANALYTICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF HYDROGEN AND OTHER GASES IN URANIUM AND OTHER REACTOR METALS BY HOT VACUUM EXTRACTION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4750352

A sample of the metal is introduced, in vacuo, into a preheated furnace tube. The extracted gases are collected, their volume measured and analyzed for carbon dioxide, hydrogen. carbon monoxide, and nitrogen, The method can be used for the following metals: uranium, niobium, vanadium, nickel, iron, zirconium as metals, powders, or alloys. The method cannot be used for magnesium or other metals of similar volatility. Where hydrogen is the major component of the gas evolved, the standard deviation of a single determination is plus or minus 3% for a 25 g sample at a hydrogen level of 1 ppm by weight. The lower limit of detection is 0.005 ml N.T.P, of gas. For a 25 g sample, this is equivalent to 0.02 ppm hydrogen by weight. (auth)
