The specific gravity and viscosity of solutions were measured at 25 deg C for the liquid phases in the systems of TBP-HNO, TBP-H/sub 2/O, and TBP-HNO/sub 3/-H/sub 2/O, in order to detect any interaction of TBP with HNO/sub 3/ or with H/ sub 2/O. Measuremerts of density and viscosity were also carried out at O deg C for the TBP-HNO/sub 3/ system. The viscosity curve for the TBP-HNO/sub 3/ system shows a maximum at 0 deg C, which disappears at 25 deg C. In the TBP-H/sub 2/O system, 50.8 mole% water dissolves in the TBP, and 2.7 x 10/sup -3/ mole % TBP dissolves in the water. However, the specific gravity and viscosity data cannot prove the existence of a TBP-H/sub 2/O complex, but do show that interaction takes place. In the ternary system TBP-HNO/sub 3/-H/sub 2/O, the amount of TBP in the aqueous phase increases with >20 mole % HNO/sub 3/ in the aqueous. No third phase formation was observed. The composition of the critical solubility point was found to be 3.8% TBP, 85.7% HNO/sub 3/, and 30.5% H/sub 2/O. The maximum viscosity was observed at 23% HNO/sub 3/ and 3.5% H/sub 2/O. A plot of the solubility of various componerts and of the viscosity is given in triangular coordinates. (TTT)
