Title: DIFFERENTIAL CROSS SECTIONS OF THE Li$sup 6$(N$sup 14$$,$$alpha$)O$sup 16$ AND Li$sup 7$(N$sup 14$$,$$alpha$)O$sup 17$ REACTIONS

Angular distributions of alpha -particles from the bombardment of thin targets of metallic Li/sup 6/ and Li/sup 7/ by 27.6-Mev incident nitrogen ions were measured. Both alpha and recoil particles were detected in coincidence by Si surfacebarrier diodes. Li/sup 6/ cross section measurements included only reactions in which the O/sup 16/ recoil was left in its ground state; Li/sup 7/ measurements did not resolve reactions leading to the ground state and the 870- Kev excited state of O/sup 17/. The Li/sup 6/ distribution exhibits a strong forward peak of 100 mu b/sr at 0 deg (cm) falling off, with some structure, to 14 mu b/ sr at 90 deg . In the backward direction, a broad peak extends from 90 to 135 deg with a maximum of 23 Vb/sr at 112 deg . The cross section then rises to a backward peak of 125 mu b/sr at 185 deg . The Li deg distribution falls from 125 mu b/sr at 0 deg to 26 mu b/sr at 90 deg and rises to 75 mu b/sr at 135 deg without clearly defined structure in the backward direction or symmetry with the cross section at the forward angles. The total cross sections were 0.40 mb plus or minus 29% and 0.44 mb plus or minus 36% for the Li/sup 6/ and Li/ sup 7/ cross sections, respectively. The asymmetry of the angular distribution and the energy dependence of the emitted alpha particles further confirm the identification of the reactions as direct processes involving a deuteron transfer from the Li/sup 6/ and a triton transfer from the Li/sup 7/. A computation of the Li/sup 6/(N/sup 14/, alpha )O/sup 16/ deuteron picku p reaction was made using the Bassel-Drisko-Satchler formulation of the distorted wave Born approximation. The data were found to agree with the predicted angular distribution in the backward direction. (Dissertation Abstr., 23: No. 6, Dec. 1962)
