Title: THE ROLE OF CHLOROPLAST LIPOPROTEIN IN PROTEIN SYNTHESIS (in Russian)

It was shown previously by tracer experiments that lipoproteins rapidly assimilate amino acids. To determine the stage of protein biosynthesis, chloroplasts were isolated from bean leaves, and incubated with C/sup 14/-tagged alanine in the presence of Mg in a sugar-potassium phosphate buffered solution (pH of 7) for periods of 30 and 60 minutes. Six tests, three without the addition of, and three with the addition of l mu mols of ATP or 5 mu mols of AMP, were run for each incubation period. It was found that unpurified ATP inhibited the assimilation of alanine by the lipoid part of the protein fraction by 50 to 80%. The assimilation of alanine by the protein part of the lipoprotein fraction was completely inhibited. The inhibition was due to an AMP impurity in the ATP. No inhibition was noted after purifying the impure ATP on a Dowex 1 column. It was found that AMP inhibited the assimilation of alanine by the lipoid half of the lipoprotein fraction by 40%, and completely inhibited the assimilation of alanine by the protein part of the lipoprotein fraction. These data indicate that the lipoproteins participate directly in the biosynthesis of protein in chloroplasts. (TTT)
