The principle is described of inertial corfinement of plasma in which a cylindrical metallic shell compresses a magnetic field and plasma in a soft- core'' geometry. The shell transforms a part of its kinetic energy irto the thermal energy of the compressed plasma and into the stored magnetic energy. The source of the kinetic energy of the shell can be either a condenser bank or an annular explosive charge. Two experiments, each using one of these energysources, are described. (auth)
