In the summer of l980 one of the wells on the Brookhaven National Laboratory site became accidentally contaminated with radioactive material. Procedures used in tracking the spread of the contamination through the soil are described. Data are presented on the radioactivity in water from test wells and soil samples taken over a 2-year period. In 1961 approximately 227,000 gal of water were pumped from the test wells, decontaminated by means of an ion exchange column, and returned to the environment. The cost of this decontamination was approximately 1.06 mills/gal. (C.H.)
