The process comprises forming a solution of the rare earth sulfates, reducing the solution with zinc dust at a pH of 1 to 2.5 in the absence of O/sub 2/, and adding sodium or potassium sulfate to precipitate the rare earth double alkali sulfates. For rare earth mixtures such as in monazite, precipitation of 5 to 10% of the total rare earths is sufficient to precipitate 95 to 99% of the europium. (D.L.C.)
