The chemical state of the fission fragment I/sup 131/ diffusing out of UO/sub 2/ or ThO/sub 2/ into graphite was studied by means of thermochromatography. The results show that the chemical state of the fission fragment I/sup 131/ is the iodide, and it is suggested that I/sup 131/ combines with U or Th to form the iodide. (D.L.C.)
