Title: MOSSBAUER EFFECT IN Tm$sup 169$ IN THULIUM IRON GARNET

Journal Article · · Phys. Letters

The nuclear hyperfine structure of the 8.4-kev transition in Tm /sup 169/ in polycrystalline TmIG was studied. The measured absorption spectrum of TmIG at 78 deg K agreed in the central region, plus or minus 6 cm/sec, with that previously determined, but displayed new outer peaks at plus or minus 10 cm/sec. An explanation by which the absorption spectrum should consist of two six-line hyperfine spectra with equal intensities but different splittings is proposed and is used to analyze the data. Tm/sup 3+/ ion moment and hyperfine interactions were obtained, and Tm sublattice magnetization values derived from the Mossbauer data are lower than those taken from bulk magnetization measurements.
