Title: RADIOACTIVE IMPURITIES IN THE POLONIUM PROCESS AT MOUND LABORATORY

Abstract

Radioactive impurities in the polonium process at Mound Laboratory were investigated radiochemically. Tellurium and, to a lesser extent, selenium were found to be the radioactive impurities in the polonium product. At least 30 days' cooling time is recommended for the irradiated bismuth in order to avoid greater-than-tolerance amounts of Po/sup 210/ in waste solutions. Specifications for bismuth feed material are being evaluated to include maximum permissible concentrations of selenium and tellurium. (auth)
