A NANOSECOND PULSE HEIGHT DISCRIMINATOR
built employing tunnel diodes. The discriminator accepts negative pulses from 0.5 to 10.0 v in height, with rise times from 0.5 to 20 nsec and durations from 5 to 100 nsec. The threshold voltage for discrimination is set in terms of a calibrated potentiometer on the front panel of the circuit. mv over the entire range of threshold settings, and the maximum time variation in the leading edge of the output pulse as a function of the excess above threshold for the input is 10 nsec. Two output pulses are provided: one is a -5v pulse into 50 ohms, with a rise time of 3 nsec and duration of 30 nsec; the second is a +8v pulse with 10 nsec rise time and 100 nsec duration to drive a scaling circuit directly. Although used in a 50 ohm counting system, modifications of this circuit for use with higher impedance systems are described. (auth)
