THE USE OF IONIZING RADIATIONS FOR INCREASING GENETIC VARIABILITY IN CULTIVATED PLANTS (in Italian)
On the basis of results obtained by irradiation of Drosophila populations, experiments were started on maize populations treating with x-rays the male inflorescence and on wheat populations treating dormant seeds. It was possible to demonstrate that irradiation increases the genetic variability for a series of morphological and production traits through the induction of mutations in the heroditary units responsible for such traits. Experiments are in progress to test whether such new genetic variability might be useful for determining or improving new progress under selection for high productivity, as it has been possible in Drosophila populations. Experiments were performed also to test whether it is possible to modify, by means of ionizing radiations, the combining ability of inbred lines in corn. X-ray treatments were applied to the tassel of a homozygous population. Different lines were derived from the population with repeated selfing and tested for combining ability in crosses to WF 9. Some of the lines possess low combining ability, while others gave good evidence of high combining ability when crossed to the common tester WF 9, giving evidence that combining ability of the parental homozygous population was modified as a consequence of the radiation applied to the male gametes.
