Title: BIOLOGICAL ACTION OF HIGH-ENERGY PROTONS (500 Mev)

Abstract

Data on the effects of high-energy protons on the duration of life and the condition of the peripheral blood were obtained in experiments on 490 white rats (Wistar line). Doses of 28, 39, 114, 275, 358, 422, 760, 864, and 1008 rad were given at a rate of 0.7-2.3 rad/sec and a pulse frequency of 100/sec. The LD/ sub 50/ for animals after 30, 80, and 120 days was 600 plus or minus 35 rad, and after 15 days, 710 plus or minus 45 rad. High-energy protons differed little from x and gamma rays with respect to their effect on duration of life. Dynamic observation of the condition of the peripheral blood showed that more significant changes occurred in the white blood cells composition in the initial period after irradiation (up to 28 days). The most essential changes appeared in the red blood cells after 6-7 months. The form of the dose-effect curve depended essentially not only on the physiological peculiarities of the system being investigated, but also on the period of observation. An increased effect following an increased dose should not always be expected. (TCO)
