EFFECT ON URANIUM OXIDE OF CONTROLLING GRAIN GROWTH DURING SINTERING

Experiments were carried out on UO/sub 2/ in which grain growth was suppressed by two methods by adding to the UO/sub 2/ a small quantity of a finely divided second phase, namely Pt, and by sintering for prolonged periods at relatively low temperatures. The highest densities, approaching 10.9 g/cm/sup 3/ , were obtained by sintering initially highly nonstoichiometric material for 70 hr at 1400 deg C in H. (TCO)
