Barrel and pipeline centrifugal compressors, the end-user`s application
Natural gas centrifugal compressors in the 7,500- to 45,000-hp range proliferate in the oil and gas industry. These high-powered compressors are commonly of two types, barrel compressors (barrels) and pipeline compressors (pipeliners). Unique operating characteristics of pressure head (comparable to pressure ratio) and inlet flow complement the respective differences. Barrels are typically reserved for applications requiring high head and low flow, while pipeliners are reserved for low head, high flow applications. An explanation of the end-user`s application that creates the characteristic head and flow operating requirement is the focus of this article. Discussion is limited to the `pipeline` segments to which high-power barrels and pipeliners are generally of most service. 2 refs., 6 figs.
