OSTI ID:4660893
Treatment of Mo- U alloys at an initial temperature of 100 to 300 deg C with a gaseous mixture of a hydrogen halide and molecular oxygen gives uranium oxide or a mixture of uranium oxyfluoride and uranium tetrafluoride that is/are substantially free from Mo. Hydriodic hydrobromic, hydro chloric, or hydrofluoric acids can be used as the hydrogen halide; and subsequent fluoridization and distillation of the product will give substantially pure uranium hexafluoride.
