Title: THE BIOSYNTHESIS AND METABOLISM OF OESTROGENS IN THE RAT. 2. THE CONVERSION OF 4-$sup 14$C TESTOSTERONE INTO $sup 14$C OESTRADIOL-17$beta$ BY THE OVARY AFTER WHOLE-BODY IRRADIATION

The effect of whole-body irradiation (400 rads) on the ability of the rat ovary to produce estrogen in vitro from (4-C/sup 14/ testosterone at times up to 180 days after irradiation was investigated. After an initial lag, the biosynthesis of estradiol-17 BETA , from 6 days after irradiation onward, appeared to be as high as with tissue from the nonirradiated controls. The biosynthesis of estrogen by ovarian tissue after the destruction of follicular elements by higher doses of irradiation is discussed. (auth)
