Title: EXAMINATION OF PWR CORE 1 BLANKET FUEL RODS FOR MICROSTRUCTURE CHANGES, HYDROGEN PICKUP, BURST STRENGTH, AND FISSION GAS RELEASE AT THE END OF THE SECOND SEED LIFE

Abstract

PWR blanket fuel rods have completed their second seed life of approximately 13,700 EFPH. Upon the completion of the metallurgical evaluation it was observed that there were no significant changes in rod dimensions, fuel or sheathing microstructure, or average fission gas release and that it compares favorably with the data obtained at the end of the first seed life. Hydrogen pickup of the Zircaloy-2 sheath is consistently low, and extrapolation of all data shows that no adverse effects are anticipated in the performance of the blanket fuel rods during Seed 3 life.
