Title: Acid rain and our nation`s capital: A guide to effects on buildings and monuments

Abstract

This booklet focuses on acid rain and its impact on our Nation`s capital. This booklet will define acid rain, explain what effects it has on marble and limestone buildings, and show, on a walking tour, some of the places in our Nation`s capital where you can see the impact of acid precipitation.

  • This report on desert and steppe ecosystems is part of a series synthesizing the results of scientific research related to the effects of air pollution and acid deposition on fish and wildlife resources. The features of desert and steppe ecosystems which determine the sensitivity of these ecosystems to air pollution are described. Data related to the effects of air pollutants on biota and whole ecosystems are reviewed. The data come from both field and laboratory studies. Some general information based on studies in other ecosystems is included. Suggestions are made for areas of further research. In general there has beenmore » less concern for the effects of air pollutants on the biota of deserts and steppes than for those of other ecosystems. Much of the concern for, and research on, air pollution in desert and steppe ecosystems is related to fossil fuel powered electric generating plants. 47 references, 3 figures, 8 tables.« less
  • This report on arctic tundra and alpine meadow ecosystems is part of a series synthesizing the results of scientific research related to the effects of air pollution and acid deposition on fish and wildlife resources. Recently performed research reveals the growing air pollution problem in arctic tundra and alpine meadow ecosystems once thought to be relatively unpolluted. The ecosystem features which determine sensitivity to air pollution are described. Data related to the effects of air pollutants on biota and whole ecosystems are reviewed. Because very little work has been done on the effects of air pollution specifically in arctic andmore » alpine ecosystems this report includes relevant information based on studies in other ecosystems. Suggestions are made for areas of further research. 68 references, 2 figures.« less
  • This report summarizes the results of scientific research related to air pollution effects on fish and wildlife associated with lakes and wetlands. The effects of photochemical oxidants, particulates, and acidifying air pollutants on water quality and lake and wetland biota are summarized. The characteristics that indicate lake sensitivity to air pollutants, in particular acidifying pollutants, are presented. Socioeconomic aspects of air pollution impacts on lake ecosystems are discussed and areas of research are suggested to increase the understanding of the effects of air pollutants on lake and wetland ecosystems. 172 references, 1 figure, 6 tables.
  • This report on rivers and streams is part of a series synthesizing the results of scientific research related to the effects of air pollution and acid deposition on fish and wildlife resources. The effects of photochemical oxidants, particulates, and acidifying air pollutants on water quality and river and stream biota are summarized. The characteristics that reflect river and stream sensitivity to air pollutants, in particular acidifying pollutants, are presented. Socioeconomic aspects of air pollution impacts on river and stream ecosystems are discussed. 71 references, 2 figures, 5 tables.
  • Report 10 of the series synthesizing the results of scientific research related to the effects of air pollution and acid depositon on fish and wildlife resources deals with the urban ecosystem. General aspects of urban ecosystem relevant to a discussion of air pollution effects are presented with an outline of various other types of ecosystem stresses. This report describes plant, animal, and ecosystem responses to air pollution within the following pollutant categories: photochemical oxidates, atmospheric metals, acidifying air pollutants and miscellaneous urban air pollutants. The potential use of biological indicators in monitering ambient urban air pollution is introduced. 206 references, more » 8 figures, 19 tables.« less
