Which protocol for remote communications with magnetic flowmeter systems?
- Bailey-Fischer & Porter, Warminster, PA (United States)
Today, electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters) are being used more and more to transmit process flow measurements to remote monitoring and/or control system -- e.g. DCS, PLC, or other types. Advancing technologies for such transmission (usually hardwired and digital) have led to a variety of protocols. The term {open_quotes}protocol{close_quotes} can be defined as a software method that allows programs on separate machines (e.g. a magmeter and a PC) to communicate. A protocol basically defines the type of communication signal, how the signals are transmitted and received, and the physical arrangement of the network. This paper describes a number of protocols applicable for use with magmeters, and points out their benefits and limitations to suit specific applications. Speed of response, reliability, compatibility, ease of maintenance, and other pertinent factors are examined. Newer technologies, such as SP50 fieldbus and Field Bus PSK, are covered. Successful monitoring and/or control systems are cited, including description of the protocol used.
