  • The principal objective of this research was the comparison of the structure and selected properties of amorphous alloys made by mechanical alloying with amorphous alloys of the same compositions made by vapor-quenching techniques. In addition, characterization of these amorphous materials in terms of structural model, powder morphology, hardness, and Moessbauer spectroscopy, and superconductivity was conducted. Many useful combinations of metals can not be achieved by melt or by conventional powder metallurgy. Such materials can be made by cold-welding metal powders in a special high-energy ball mill - mechanical alloying (MA). The Nb-Ge and Nb-Sn model systems were chosen for study.more » The measurements of the stability of the amorphous phases in Nb-25 at. % Ge and Nb-27 at. % Ge alloys were made by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). X-ray diffraction was used to follow the progress of the average structure during MA and to determine the structures of the phases formed after crystallization. It was found that the MA technique is applicable to production of amorphous structure in non-glass forming systems, (Nb-Sn and Nb-Ge). These amorphous phases were shown to exhibit a similar T/sub c/ when compared with a material obtained by vapor-quenching technique.« less
  • High strength, high conductivity copper alloys have recently been developed for a variety of technologically challenging applications, including proposed nuclear fusion reactors. The purpose of this research is to examine the effects of high temperatures and radiation levels on the microstructural stability of two commercial high-strength, high conductivity copper alloys, AMZIRC (Cu-Zr) and AMAX-MZC (Cu-Cr-Zr-Mg). The recrystallization temperature of both AMZIRC and AMAX-MZC was measured to be 475/sup 0/C for a 1 hour anneal, and was estimated to be 320/sup 0/C for a 20 year anneal which corresponds to a recrystallization energy of 3.0 eV. The yield strength of AMZIRCmore » and AMAX-MZC decreased by at least a factor of two upon recrystallization. No significant void formation was observed in pure copper or in the AMZIRC and MZC copper alloys following ion irradiation at temperatures of 100-500/sup 0/C (0.28-0.59 T/sub M/) to peak damage levels of 40 dpa. Instead, stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT) were detected. The absence of voids following ion irradiation is attributed to the low oxygen content of the copper and copper alloys (<5 ppm). Ion irradiation of cold-worked plus aged AMZIRC and AMAX-MZC caused an effective shift in the recrystallization temperature to a lower value by 75 to 150/sup 0/C compared with thermal anneal results. A simple model based on radiation-enhanced diffusion predicts a radiation-enhanced recrystallization temperature of 150/sup 0/C for these alloys for a 2 year neutron irradiation.« less
  • Optical properties of Nb alloys were investigated. Calorimetric measurements of absorptivity between 0.2 and 5.5 eV were taken for Nb samples with 20, 50, and 80 percent Mo and for Nb samples containing 10 percent Zr, 20 percent V, and 20 percent Ta. Reflectivity data for two of these samples in the ultraviolet region and known reflectivities for the pure metals to 35 eV provided the basis for extrapolation to high energies. The data were Kramers--Kronig analyzed to determine the dielectric function. The structure is discussed in terms of interband transitions as predicted by a rigid band model for themore » NbMo alloys.« less
