  • The study evaluates the applicability of specific types of pressure vessel end closures and flanged connections for high-pressure, high-temperature processes in coal liquefaction plants. The primary area of investigation is an analysis of the combined effects of pressure (3000 to 5000 psig), temperature (up to 900/sup 0/F), and external mechanical loads. The results of the study summarize the major engineering and design considerations and emphasize the need for thorough analysis and adequate testing. The final section presents a recommended test program to verify the suitability of selected design types for future use in coal-liquefaction plants. (auth)
  • Out-of-reactor tests were made on three types of reactor nozzle to Zircaloy-2 process tube connections for use in the 1706 KER in-reactor high- temperature pressurized water test facilities. Threaded connections with O-ring seals made from solid stainless steel wire proved to be the best of the three types and were selected for in-reactor use. Tapered thread connections were found to be stronger than straight thread connections. Van none flange connections using Flexitallic gasket seals were satisfactory, but were rejected because of fabrication difficulties. Compression fitting connections with special nickel gasket seals were rejected as being too weak and unreliable formore » in- reactor use. (auth)« less
  • The welding development work on the design of a seal-welded aluminum flange for 3 in. n.b. pipe is described. Recommendations are made for the design of flangea, and on the welding technique to be employed. It is concluded that a flange with a rim or lip 0.125 in. thick and 1.625 in. greater in diameter than the main body of the flange can be welded satisfactorily and the joint could be broken and rewelded a number of times. When the diameter of the lip is reduced after rewelding so that it no longer exceeds that of the main body ofmore » the flange by more than 1-inch it would be desirable to preheat prior to welding.
