Towards data fusion in seismic monitoring: Source characterization of mining blasts with acoustic and seismic records

Event identification that combines data from a diverse range of sensor types, such as seismic, hydroacoustic, infrasound, optical, or acoustic sensors, has been discussed recently as a way to improve treaty monitoring technology, especially for a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. In this exploratory study the authors compare features in acoustic and seismic data from ripple-fired mining blasts, in an effort to understand the issues of incorporating data fusion into seismic monitoring. Ground motion characterization of the single shot in a mining blast array with the close-in seismic data

Ground motion data from single, cylindrical explosions with the same source configuration as the individual explosions that make up a production mining blast array are analyzed. Strong shear motion is observed which can not be accounted for by the simple explosion source. Spall (the detachment and slap-down of the near surface strata and the separation of the burden and overburden from the continuum) accompanying the explosion seems to play an important role in shear wave energy generation. These shear energy may be the most damaging to the structures near the production site.

High-frequency observations of signals and noise near RSON: implications for the discrimination of ripple-fired mining blasts

Discrimination of large chemical explosions from possible clandestine nuclear tests is a significant issue for seismic verification. Unless discrimination is possible, the numerous mining blasts within the USSR would give ample opportunity for concealing a clandestine test. Evernden et al. (1986) advocate high frequencies as a means to detect these clandestine tests; however, mining blasts must still give a unique signature for their discrimination. Specific conditions are also necessary for high-frequency verification: low attenuation and quiet seismic stations are among the most important.
