Abstract

83 of a pilot plant for storing radioactive wastes in bedded salt is described. The program consists of laboratory and field investigations of factors affecting the suitability of a specific site in southeastern New Mexico; of more generally applicable problems associated with geohydrology and rock mechanics; and of considerations bearing on the operational safety of a pilot plant repository. Tasks concerned with the engineering development and design of the facility are also included. (auth)

The policy of the United States Atomic Energy Commission is to take custody of all commercial high-level radioactive wastes and maintain control of them in perpetuity. This policy (Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 50, Appendix F) requires that the high-level wastes from nuclear fuels reprocessing plants be solidified within five years after reprocessing and then shipped to a federal repository within ten years after reprocessing. The US Department of Energy manages an R and D Program to provide a technical basis for systems designs and safety and environmental assessments for future repositories of radioactive wastes resulting from US defense activities. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeast New Mexico is being developed with that Program as an R and D facility to demonstrate the safe disposal of such wastes in bedded salt. Because of the concern for public health and safety, when compared to normal engineering practice, radioactive waste repositories have quite unusual requirements governing performance assessment. Permeability of natural rock salt from the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) during damage evolution and healing

The US Department of Energy has developed the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in the bedded salt of southeastern New Mexico to demonstrate the safe disposal of radioactive transuranic wastes. Four vertical shafts provide access to the underground workings located at a depth of about 660 meters.
