Investigation of ion waves
Abstract
From international syrmposium on dynamics of ionized gases; Tokyo, Japan (13 Sep 1971). See CONF-710921 --. Investigations of (1) the nonlinear behavior of ion waves, (2) the growth and saturation of the ion-acoustic instability, and (3) the interaction of holes in the electron phase space with ions on a one-dimensional numerical plasma model are reported. For the nonlinear behavior of ion waves a number of different effects were examined and analyzed. The steepening and breaking of an initial sinusoidal wave were considered. It was found that for perturbations such as delta n/n approx equal k/sup 2/ lambda D/sup 2/ strong harmonic generation occurs. For sufficiently large amplitudes, the waves break and ion trapping takes place. The precise amplitude at which this occurs depends strongly on the ratio of the ion temperature to the electron temperature. A typical value for a temperature ratio of 0.03 is delta n/n = 0.25. The growth of the ion-acoustic instability was found to be in agreement with linear theory. Its saturation level was found to be determined by the energy released when electrons became trapped by the ion waves and a simple theory for it is given. Finally, it was found that holes in themore »
