Wave functions in momentum space. I. Iterative computation for the helium atom in Hartree--Fock approximation

The possibilities of obtaining wave functions for atoms and molecules by iteration of equations in momentum space have been examined. Using a first-iterate orbital some approximations to the Hartree--Fock ground state energy have been calculated. The accuracy of these results is strongly dependent on a variation of the parameters that characterize the orbital. The second-iterate orbital contains logarithmic and arctangent functions and there appear unfamiliar special functions in the third- and higher-iterate orbitals.

Accurate S-state helium wave functions in momentum space

High-accuracy helium wave functions based on exponentials with random coefficients are transformed into momentum space. The utility of the wave functions is demonstrated through calculation of the expectation value of various operators needed to evaluate relativistic and QED corrections.

This paper describes an effort to develop further the work of R. McWeeny and C. A. Coulson (Proc. Phys. Soc. London, Sect. A 62, 509 (1949)) to obtain a helium-atom ground-state wave function in momentum space. In the application of Svartholm's method (N. V. Svartholm, Ph.D. thesis, University of Lund, Sweden (1945)) to the helium momentum-space integral Schroedinger equation, a Feynman-integral evaluation technique is used to start the iteration in the electron-electron interaction term. The resulting correlated momentum-space wave function is used to evaluate the helium-atom ground-state energy and Compton profile.
