Electronic states of B$sup +$ produced by electron bombardment of boron trihalides: some ion-molecule reactions of B$sup +$
Abstract
Beam attenuation studies of B/sup +/ as a function of attenuating gas pressure shows that the beam has a composition of 35% /sup 3/P and 65% /sup 1/S when produced by 70 eV electrons from BF/sub 3/. As one proceeds in the series from BF/sub 3/ to BI/sub 3/, the amount of excited state varies in a regular manner and B/sup +/ ions are completely in the ground state when BI/sub 3/ is used as a target. The composition of the beam could also be varied by varying the electron energy. The results of the attenuation studies were also confirmed by studying the cross section vs. beam energy curves for the B/sup +/ (/sup 1/S) and B/sup +/ (/sup 3/P) reactions with N/sub 2/O. (auth)

Some Investigations of Two-Neutrons Transfer Reactions in Bombardment of Isotopes Ar$sup 90$, Zr$sup 92$, and Zr$sup 94$ with N$sup 15$ Ions; IZUCHENIE REAKTSII PEREDACHI DVUKH NEITRONOV PRI OBLUCHENII IZOTOPOV ZIRKONIYA Zr$sup 90$, Zr$sup 92$, I Zr$sup 94$ IONAMI N$sup 1$$sup 5$
The Zr/sup 90/, Zr/sup 92/, and Zr/sup 94/ separated isotope targets were bombarded with N/sup 15/ ions to investigate the dependence of the probability of two-neutron transfer on the nuclear structure. Effective cross sections were measured by means of the delayed neutron activity of N/sup 17/ nuclei in the bombarding ion energy interval 70 to 120 Mev. The ratios of the cross sections for the two-neutron transfer from Zr/sup 94/, Zr/sup 92/, Zr/sup 90/ to N/sup 15/, were 17:6:1 and 6:4:1 for N/sup 15/ ions at 60 and 100 Mev (in C.M.S.) respectively. Ac/sup 225/ and Ac/sup 226/ were produced from the bombardment of Th/sup 232/ and U/sup 238/ by nitrogen or neon ions. It is supposed that these isotopes were produced due to the stripping of a number (6-13) of nucleons from the nucleus of the bombarded element. The cross sections for actinium isotopes are higher in the thorlum bombardment (stripping of 6-7 nucleons) than in the uranium bombardment (stripping of 12-13 nucleons). It is necessary to account for the daughter products of actinium as a possible source of the back ground in identifying the transuranium elements. (auth) -
I. State-selected study of ion-molecule reactions using tandem molecular beam photoionization mass spectrometry. II. Absolute spin-orbit-state excitation cross sections for the reactions Ar/sup +/(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) + Ar(/sup 1/S/sub 0/) and Ar/sup +/(/sup 2/P/sub 3/2/) + N/sub 2/(X-tilde,v = 0)
A new ion-mole,haveule reaction apparatus, which consists of a photoionization source, a tandem mass spectrometer, and a radiofrequency (rf) octopole reaction cell, is described. Using a quadrupole mass filter to reject H/sub 3//sup +/ background ions formed at the photoionization region, absolute total cross sections for the reaction H/sub 2//sup +/(nu/sub 0/') + H/sub 2/(nu/sub 0/'' = 0) ..-->.. H/sub 3//sup +/ + H, have been measured as a function of the vibrational state of reactant H/sub 2//sup +/, where nu/sub 0/' = 0 to 4, over the center-of-mass collision energy range of 0.04 to 15 eV.
