A method of forming a nuclear fuel compact is described, comprising fission-product- retaining fuel in the form of coated spheroids and a filler material and incorporating a polymerizable binder. The method incorporates formation of a green compact by depositing the filler material and the binder in a mold in successive layers, inserting into each layer a monolayer of fissionproduct- retaining spheroids before depositing the next adjacent layer of filler material and, having completed the compact, polymerizing the binder to form the green compact into a coherent body.
