In a disoussion on the present state of high temperature gascooled reactor technology, the environmental advantages of the system are outlined and followed by a description of operating experiences with Dragon, AVR, Peach Bottom, Fort St. Vrain, and the THTR. The essential features of the 3000 MW(t) and 2000 MW-(t) commercial HTGR's offered by Gulf General Atomic are described and the present commercial position is outlined. A brief summary of HTGR development in Europe and Japan is followed by a consideration of advanced versions, i.e., the direct cycle type. and HTGR's for process heat and for hydrogen production. Later advanced concepts, the GCFR and the thermonuclear fusion reactor concept Doublet, are also assessed. In conclusion, a forecast of the future of helium cooled reactcrs includes a schedule for their development. (UK)
