ABS>Radiological and Environmental Research Division annual report, July 1972-June 1973. Three groups (15 in each group) of 3-month-old mice were injected i.p. with 1/2 mu Ci /sup 226/Ra. These groups were matched by similar control animals, which were not injected. Osteosarcomas were found in 40% of the male C3H/H mice and 80% of the female C3H/H mice, animals known to carry mammary viruses. No osteosarcomas were found in the female CBA/H mice, which have a very low incidence of both mammary tumors and leukemias. Viruses were observed in both mammary tumors and in osteosarcomas, which developed in the same animals. The possible association of virus in both types of tumors is discussed. (auth)
