High voltage research (breakdown strengths of gaseous and liquid insulators). Third quarterly report for period ending December 31, 1976. [C/sub 6/F/sub 10/, C/sub 6/F/sub 12/, C/sub 4/F/sub 6/, C/sub 3/F/sub 8/ with N/sub 2/, SF/sub 6/, c-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/, iso-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/]
The systematic basic and applied work to improve gaseous dielectrics continued. The breakdown strengths of C/sub 6/F/sub 10/ (perfluorocyclohexene) and C/sub 6/F/sub 12/ (mixture of 1,2- and 1,3-perfluorodimethylcyclobutane) have been found to be, respectively, 2.3 to 2.4 and 1.9 to 2.2 times higher than SF/sub 6/ under identical experimental conditions. The breakdown strengths of mixtures of C/sub 4/F/sub 6/, SF/sub 6/, c-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/, iso-C/sub 4/F/sub 8/, and C/sub 3/F/sub 8/ with N/sub 2/ have been studied systematically in various combinations in an effort to understand the role of the basic properties and effectiveness of each component of a multicomponentmore » -
EMPIRICAL EQUATIONS OF CRITICAL INFINITE CYLINDERS CONTAINING AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF UO$sub 2$F$sub 2$
The stainless-steel-walled critical reactor data previously reported (using 93.4% U/sup 235/ assay) are extrapolated graphically for H: U/sup 235/ atomic natios of from 2O to zero. The atomic ratio of zero represents a reactor core containing only high-density UO/sub 2/F/sub 2/ salt. All cores are complctely H/sub 2/Oreflected. Values of the infinite slabs and infinite cylinders are then derived. These infiaite-cylinder values along with values at the oiher moderations are represented by a single empirical equation. An empirical equation of the same form is derived for the Al-walled reactors. The critical masses for the equilateral cylindrical vessels for ihe high-U/supmore »
