Neutronic characteristics of the Tory II-A-1 test reactor. PTN No. 210
BS>Declassified 18 Aug 1966. The predicted neutronic behavior of the first PLUTO test reactor is described. At first a reappraisal of criticality is made in consideration of the best parameter data at hand. It is found that an excess reactivity of nine cents can be computed at the design point. The effects on reactivity due to the more accurate determination of certain parameters have been such as to cancel each other in most cases. Tory II-A-1 is expected to go critical at a control vane angle of 43 degrees, assuming a temperature of 300 deg K, fully withdrawn vernier control rods, and the presence of all components as they are presently scheduled for the final assembly at the Nevada Test Site. At full power operating conditions, the reactor should maintain criticality at a control vane angle of 69 degrees. In this state and at a power level of about 156 megawatts, the average core temperature should be approximately 1350 deg K and the deviation of radial power density from a flat profile should be not more than plus or minus 2-3%.
