Title: Neutron--proton shell model multiplets in $sup 88$Y and $sup 90$Y from a study of the ($alpha$,n$gamma$) reaction

Abstract

BS>The nonselective nature of the ( alpha ,n gamma ) reaction was used to complement information from charged-particle reactions on the level structure of /sup 88/Y and /sup 90/Y. The gamma -ray spectra were recorded with a 25 cm/ sup 3/ Ge(Li) detector at 90 deg to the beam using primarily targets of /sup 85/ Rb/sub 2/CO and /sup 87/Rb/sub 2/CO/sub 3/ and alpha -particle e nergies of 11.8, 12.2 and 13.0 MeV. The resulting transitions were accommodated in level schemes that involved primarily the following shell model configurations. ( pi p/ sub 1/2/)/sup 1/( nu g/9/2)/sup -1, ( pi g/sub 9/2)/su p -1/( nu g/sub 9/2/)/sup 1/, ( pi p/sub 1/2/)/sup 1/( nu p/sub 1/2/)/sub -1, /sub 1/2/)/sup 1/( nu d/sup 5/ 2/)/sup 1/, ( pi g/sub 9/2/)/sup 1/( nu d/sub 2)/sup 1/, ( pi p/sub 1/2/)/sup 1/( nu s/sub 1/2/)/sup 1/ in /sup 90/Y. (auth) l4232 Using krypton and argon ion barbombardment the fission cross sections of the compound nucleus on a series of target nuclei were obtained. For the angon-initiated reactions the effect of the angular momentum on the fission barrier height was studied, and the mass and kinetic enengy spectra of fragments produced by fission ofmore » the compound nucleus were determined. The values of the mean total kinetic enengies and the total kinetic energy and mass distribution widths were compared with the predictions of differert models. In the case of krypton a new type of reaction was observed: partial fusion between the projectile and the tanget and then disintegration to two fragments of masses similar to those of the projectile and the target. The effect of the mass of the target nucleus on this phenomenon was studied. (JFP)« less
