EFFECT OF DISLOCATIONS AND GRAIN BOUNDARIES UPON THE DYNAMIC FORMATION OF SLIP BANDS IN ALUMINUM
A free grain boundary is found to have no effect upon the velocity of propagation of slip bands in Al. The method is explained by which a free grain boundary may be obtained bv means of a 180 deg rotation about the longitudinal axis of an Al single crystal. Also, it is determined that the average slip band velocity in a crystal is not affected by the average etch-pit density of the crystal; but that the slip velocity of propagaiion of nearest neighbor slip bands occurring in sequence is proportional to the average etchpit density. The crystallography of the slip systems which activate in a bicrystal containing a free grain boundary is discussed, and a relation between crystallography and slip band velocity is proposed. It is found, also, that slip activation may occur at a free grain boundary. (auth)
