LIQUID METAL FUEL REACTOR EXPERIMENT. THE EFFECT OF SLURRY INHOMOGENEITY ON NUCLEAR STABILITY OF LIQUID METAL FUEL REACTORS
The two slurries being considered for LMFR use are thorium bismuthide, partially soluble in bismuth, and slurries insoluble in bismuth, such as ThO/sub 2/, ThC, or ThF/sub 4/. With an insoluble slurry, the slurry particles may be composed of a single solid phase, the mixed Th and U compounds being in solid solution. These questions were investigated for the one- or two-region LMFR, using either a soluble or insoluble slurry: What happens when the slurry concentration increases or decreases in the core or blanket region? Will a choice of suitable initial operating conditions and/or choice of slurry materials compensate formore » -
PROCESSING METHODS, FISSION PRODUCT POISONING AND FUEL CYCLE COSTS FOR FLUID FUEL REACTORS
The fuel cycles and fuel-cycle costs were investigated for the aqueous homogeneous, molten salt, and liquid bismuth reactors. Estimates of the fission- product and protactinium poisoning, which determines the breeding ratio and doubling time or fuel yield, were made. Potentially, each of the reactors can operate as a breeder with a useful doubling time and at comparable fuel-cycle costs probably in the range 1.0 to 1.5 mills/kwh. Generally the costs increase sharply with increasing breeding ratio and tend to decrease at lower breeding ratios, but this tendency is limited practically for the AHBR and LBBR because of increasing blanket power.more »
