Process control computers are the most important element of the monitoring system of nuclear power plants with pressurized water reactors. They provide the operating personnel with the information required for the detection and handling of malfunctions and for choosing appropriate modes of operation. Process control computers are predominantly used to increase the availability of the overall plant. The information available to the personnel --above all in the reactor building itself ---is essentially based on data that can only be obtained by means of process control computers. The approved standardized systems that are used for this purpose in present PWR-type reactors are described. (GE)
