The preparation of B/sup 10/ metal involves a preliminary isotopic separation of B/sup 10/ from B/sup 11/ through the (CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/O-BF/ sub 3/ complex. Conversion of the complex to H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/ consiitutes a step in a proposed electrolytic process for making the desired boron metal. Hydrolysis of the complex to form H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/ occurs leadily in a boiling aqueous slurry of the stoictriometric quantity of CaCO/sub 3/. Recovery of anhydrous H/sub 3/BO/ sub 3/ required a filtration to remove CaF and evaporation to remove water. The return of the evaporated water to the process eliminates volatility losses of acid. Yields of H/sub 3/BO/sub 3/ are practically 1OO% by this method. (auth)
