Comparative long-term effects of liver damage in the rat after (a) localized x irradiation and (b) localized x irradiation in the presence of a strong homogeneous magnetic field
Rats were subjected to a fractionated x-ray dose of 6000 rads to the liver and a fractionated x-ray dose of 6000 rads to the liver carried out in the presence of a static 6000 Oe homogeneous magnetic field applied to the animals at right angles to the incoming x rays. Serum concentrations of alanine aminotransferase (AlT), aspartate aminotransferase (AsT) and total hemolytic complement were determined at various times up to 153 days after commencement of treatment. All three serum components exhibited marked effects, which indicated that the magnetic field applied during x-irradiation enhanced liver damage. The magnetic field applied alone also caused variations in serum levels of the three components studied. (auth)
