Predicting rotary drill performance
Abstract
Looking at the process of drilling rock from the standpoint of the power required, yields an equation that relates Force-on-the-Bit; Torque, to rotate the bit; and bit Angular Speed to the Penetration Rate of the bit; the Area of the hole being drilled and the Specific Fracture Energy of the rock. Specific Fracture Energy and the Compressive Strength of the rock are related. Data from both laboratory-type and field testing are presented. This data shows relationships that facilitate using the power concept above to predict the Penetration Rate a drill is capable of achieving. One of the relationships that the data reveals is that between the Penetration per Revolution of the bit and the rock Specific Fracture Energy. It appears these two parameters are hyperbolically related. This hyperbolic relationship leads to the conclusion that the Torque required to rotate the bit should be constant as a bit penetrates rock of varying Specific Fracture Energy. Data are shown which tends to support the constant Torque model of the drilling process. A simple, multi-axis graph is presented which makes predicting rotary drill performance easy and fast.
