The failure of molybdenum crucibles in which UO/sub 2/-- SiO/sub 2/ vitroceramics are melted (in the 2300 to 2500 deg C region) appears to be due to a too rapid heating (>10 to 15 deg C/minute) of the bath. An approximation based on thermodynamic data (liquidus and solidus) on the formation of a compound between Mo and Si is used to demonstrate that local equilibrium can result in a liquidus phase at lower temperatures than those of the general diagram. The failure mechanism is thus determined from the type of equilibrium corresponding to the heating rate. Data obtained using fast neutron activation are in agreement with the equilibrium diagram and the behavior predicted for local equilibria. (FR)
