Title: Integrated control room system for a nuclear power plant

The control systems/operator interface and plant instrumentation system interconnections have increased markedly in the last decade. While plant ratings have increased from 200 MW(e) to 1200 MW(e), control board lengths have grown from 40 feet to 60 feet, and control wires entering the control room have more than doubled. The increased scope of control equipment affects both the construction schedule and the operator interface. The larger quantity of control equipment increases and complicates the construction schedule of the plant. In todays nuclear power plants, the operator is faced with more systems, with more data per system, and because of the larger plant rating, more serious consequences resulting from misoperation. Integration of control system equipment, operator displays, and control room rearrangement offers many advantages which help alleviate the difficulties arising from increased plant size. Integration of equipment functions reduces intracontrol room cabling and provides a readily accessible interface for field wiring. The control room arrangement philosophy of the integrated approach directs the assemblage of controls used during normal operation into one operating console or benchboard. Other controls are grouped and set aside from the normal operation but conveniently available for operator action. The instrumentation for each plant system includes annunciation, cathode ray tube displays, selected hardwired indications and control elements. Subloop sequencing is utilized where it can be done so prudently. A major component of the operator interface is the data acquisition and the associated cathode ray tube display system. This system is a computer based system which uses the principle of distributed intelligence. The distributed intelligence system provides flexibility and ease of expansion. The integrated control room concept employs modular floor sections for the factory mounting of control room equipment. Modular floor sections allow interpanel connections to be made in the factory and facilitates the site installation of the control room equipment. Factory interconnection of control room panels provides for factory system testing in addition to the customary panel component tasks. (auth)
