Title: SOLVENT EXTRACTION PROCESSING OF URANIUM AND THORIUM ORES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4322771

diagrams for application to uranium recovery are presented and are discussed with regard to chemical reaction involved, effects of process variables, factors affecting the choice of extraction reagent, process equipment and estimated process costs. Pertinent chemical and operational differenes between the two processes are pointed out, and the status of their commercial application is given. The two processes serve to complement each other in providing efficient processes for a wide range of ore leach liquor compositions. By appropriate choice of ex tractant and operating conditions, the Amex process can be adapted to the recovery of thorium and possibly vanadium , and the Dapex process can be adapted to the recovery of vanadium. The latter process has been commercially installed in two ore processing plants. Representative non diagrams for vanadium and thorium recovery are presented along with brief discussions of the important process variables. In addition to the recovery of uranium, thorium, and vanadium, the properties of the for considereing othre applications. The processes described, important in themselves, are also important in demonstrating the feasibility of a new technology wherein the ion exchange principle is utilized on a solvent extraction basis. The wide range of control available through choice of reagent structure and diluent type and the inherent advantantages of liquid-liquid techniques combine to offer a highly versatile operation which may find applicatiion in other inorganic and organic separations. Current development of applications in radiochemical processing is briefly described. (auth)
